Disposable nappies…. Anything with the word ‘disposable’ in its name isn’t usually good…..!! And nappies are no exception. Sure, nobody likes dealing with poo and the less you have to smell it, wipe it, look at it the better!! So it’s no surprise that convenience and disposability is king.
What Can I Do….??
Choose to use re-usable, washable nappies instead of disposable ones. There are lots of great options and systems to choose from depending on what you prefer – prefolds, all in ones, pockets…. You’ll avoid throwing anything in the bin – the poo goes down the loo and the soiled part of the nappy is rinsed, soaked and washed ready to use again.
There are also complete ‘birth to potty’ packs available from some brands which include everything you’ll need for your baby until they are potty trained!! We bought a set like this and used it for all of our three children. The savings (both $$ and waste-wise) are even greater if you use your nappies for multiple kids. And if you look after your nappies, you can even on-sell them when your family is complete.
Go the Extra Mile
Choose a nappy system with natural fabrics if possible. These will include things like cotton, hemp or bamboo. Avoid microfibre as every time you wash it, it sheds tiny plastic particles into your wastewater….!!
