It’s a monthly thing for most women, and it’s completely natural of course. But some of the ‘tools’ we’ve been using for many years to absorb the flow create mountains of waste….!!
FACT: More than 45 billion tampons and single-use sanitary pads end up in landfills each year.
Tampons and pads are single use items that end up in landfill. In recent years, people have been asking… is there a better way….??
What Can I Do…??
The good news is that there are now lots of sustainable period options on the market. Period pants have an absorbent liner, often made of bamboo to absorb flow whilst minimising the bulk of pads. These pants are simply washed and reused making them a very sustainable choice!! Re-usable pads are also available now and come in a variety of shapes and sizes, styles and colours to suit you.
Menstrual cups are also a thing. These genius devices are aimed at tampon users who are looking for a more sustainable option. They’re made of silicone or TPE and are a little collection device that sits comfortably where a tampon usually would, which you just empty, rinse and re-use……!!! So simple.
Go the Extra Mile
Support a local NZ business and avoid products that contain microfibre, latex, BPA or rubber. Take a look at Period Poverty charities too and support if you can….!!
If you have a teen or pre-teen, talk to them about sustainable options for their period. If possible get them started on an eco option right from the beginning!! It will save you lots of $$ and set them up with a great habit for life.
