I love a good party but celebrations can create A LOT of waste!! There’s decorations, throwaway cups and cutlery, food, balloons, wrapping paper and packaging……
Balloons can travel!! Once released into the open (either on purpose or by accident), they can float across 100’s of kilometres. Once they deflate, they simply drop where they are, into the sea or onto the land where animals and sea creatures can mistake them for food. And even if we’re careful about keeping balloons contained and disposing of them properly…. they’re still plastic waste that could have been avoided.
What Can I Do…??
Choose not to use balloons or other single use plastic decorations. It sounds simple because it is…..!! Pretty fabric or paper bunting, tissue paper pom poms, fresh flowers, candles, paper streamers and lanterns are all more eco friendly choices than balloons. Lots of these items can be re-used or composted, reducing your party waste!!
Go the Extra Mile
Think about other single use items at your party that could be replaced with reusable ones. Borrow decorations and crockery. Opt for fabric napkins and tablecloths. Instead of glitter or confetti, stamp out leaves, collect your own petals or purchase natural confetti. And remember that parties are all about who is with you – not what’s hanging from the ceiling…..!!!
